What Is Lift Off?

Lift Off helps teachers provide reading materials at the right level for every student. Teachers upload assignments, and Lift Off adjusts the reading level and language. Students access their version by entering a class code—no account or sign-up required.

What We Collect

From Teachers

About Students

Students never create accounts and never enter information themselves. Teachers provide:

That's it. No email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses, photos, dates of birth, or demographic information.

Student reading levels, preferred languages, and other data provided by teachers are treated as education records under FERPA and receive all protections described in this policy. Student cookies contain only internal identifiers—no names or personal information.

Educational Content

How We Use AI

When a teacher uploads an assignment:

  1. If the document is a scanned image or PDF, we use Google Cloud Vision to read the text. Images are processed in memory and not stored.
  2. We send the assignment text to OpenAI to adjust reading level and/or translate it.
  3. We save the adjusted version so it doesn't need reprocessing.
Only assignment text is sent to AI services—never student names or personal information. All AI calls are made from our servers; student devices never communicate directly with AI providers, and providers never see a student's IP address. AI providers are prohibited by their published terms and applicable agreements from using submitted data for model training. Submitted content may be retained by providers for a limited period for abuse monitoring in accordance with their current data usage policies.
